Key takeaways
Since April 2019, Spyder crews have collected customers' unopened, non-perishable food on moving day and delivered it to local pantries at no cost through Move for Hunger, a New Jersey nonprofit founded in 2009. The program started in Mississippi and expanded to Spyder's Colorado moves in 2025.
Spyder Moving and Storage has been a Move for Hunger partner since April 2019, when it announced it was the first moving company in Mississippi to join the nonprofit’s network. Since then, Spyder crews in Mississippi, and since 2025 in Colorado as well, have offered customers a simple option on moving day: set aside unopened, non-perishable food and the crew will deliver it to a local food pantry. It is one of the oldest parts of Spyder’s community work, and in September 2026 the company named it the anchor of its standing community commitment.
What is Move for Hunger?
Move for Hunger is a national nonprofit based in Neptune, New Jersey, that works with the moving and transportation industry to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the U.S. and Canada. It started in 2009, when founder Adam Lowy and his family began asking customers of their New Jersey moving business to donate the food they were not taking with them.
The idea is simple. People who are moving often leave full pantries behind: canned goods, pasta, cereal and other shelf-stable food that is too heavy to haul or easy to replace. Instead of ending up in the trash, that food can go to people who need it. Move for Hunger’s network of member movers collects it during the move and drops it off at local food banks and pantries.
How Spyder’s partnership has grown since 2019
Spyder’s own announcements trace the partnership from one Mississippi office to two states. The milestones below come from the company’s social media posts and its September 2026 press release.
| Date | Where | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| April 2019 | Mississippi | Spyder announces it is the first Mississippi moving company to partner with Move for Hunger and starts collecting customers’ unopened food for local pantries. |
| August 2022 | Oxford, MS | A Spyder crew delivers collected food to a local food pantry in Oxford, marking four years in the Move for Hunger network. |
| February 2025 | Colorado | Spyder announces that the Move for Hunger partnership now covers its moves in Colorado as well. |
| September 2026 | All offices | Spyder’s community commitment names Move for Hunger as a partner it will support every year, using its moving routes to help get surplus food to families. |
The Oxford drop-off in 2022 shows how the program works at street level: the food a family leaves in the kitchen cabinet does not leave town. It goes to a pantry in the same community, carried by the same crew that moved the family.
Why food drives fit a moving company
Most hunger programs need two things a moving company already has: people who are in homes every day, and trucks that are on the road anyway. Spyder’s crews pack kitchens all week. Adding a box of canned goods to the load costs almost nothing, and it turns food that would be thrown out into meals.
Vlad Ladygin, who founded Spyder in 2017, put it plainly in the company’s September 2026 press release: “We’re a moving company, not a foundation.” In the same release he said that sending a truck somewhere is an easy decision when it helps more than it costs. Move for Hunger is the clearest example of that idea in practice, which is why the company calls it a yearly commitment rather than a seasonal food drive.
How you can donate food when you move with Spyder
If you are moving with Spyder from one of its offices in Oxford, Hattiesburg or Denver, or another Mississippi or Colorado location, you can take part in a few steps:
- Let the Spyder team know before moving day that you would like to donate food.
- Set aside unopened, non-perishable food: canned goods, boxed pasta and rice, cereal, peanut butter and similar items. Skip anything opened, expired, frozen or refrigerated.
- Leave it in one spot, ideally in a box or bag, so the crew can load it separately from your belongings.
- The crew delivers it to a local food bank or pantry at no cost to you.
It is also a good way to lighten a long-distance move. Heavy canned goods add weight to the load, so donating them is often more sensible than packing them, especially if you are moving across the country with Spyder’s long-distance movers. Move for Hunger has more ideas for helping, from hosting a food drive to finding member movers in other cities, on its official Move for Hunger website.
Part of Spyder’s work in the community
Spyder Moving and Storage counts Move for Hunger among the partners it supports every year, alongside the Denver Children’s Foundation and local animal shelters such as the Oxford Animal Resource Center. If you know a food pantry near one of Spyder’s offices that could use a hand, let the team know, and if you are moving soon, mention that you would like to donate food when you book.
